About University Institute of Legal Studies
University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) was established as constituent department of Panjab University, in the academic session 2004-05. During a short span of time, it has emerged as one of the premier legal Institute with a unique blend of tradition and modernity. Its mission is to equip the students with the skills to comprehend and diagnose the intricacies of various legal and other inter-disciplinary issues and devise solutions to these problems through analysis and reasoning. The stimulating and interactive academic environment of the Institute helps to hone the Drafting, Research, Advocacy, Interviewing and Negotiation- skills of the students. To accomplish this, the Institute arranges a number of curricular and extra-curricular activities. Students are trained in essence of the substantive laws, techniques of procedural laws, methods of client counselling and skills in legal and social sciences research etc. The Moot Court Competitions, Client Counselling Sessions, Quiz Contests, Seminars, Group Discussions and Extension Lectures etc. are a regular feature of the academic calendar of the Institute. The Institute also exposes its students to the ‘law in action’ through compulsory internships with Hon’ble Judges of Supreme Court, Punjab and Haryana High Court, eminent lawyers, legal firms, various commissions and NGOs, etc. The Institute’s own Legal Aid Clinic, not only provides free legal services to the economically weaker sections of the society as a part of community outreach programme of the Institute, but also offers opportunities to the students to work in co-ordination with eminent practicing advocates. The endeavour behind these action oriented ‘programmes’ is to enable the students to understand that the legal professionals, besides their professional responsibilities have a significant impact on the society at large.
PUBLICATIONS
To sharpen the analytical skills of the students and to promote an intellectually challenging environment, the Institute brings out a number of publications based on a range of contemporary socio-legal issues. The Institute has been publishing the Journal of University Institute of Legal Studies a referred bi-annual Journal (bearing ISSN number) since the year 2008. The Institute also launched a student journal titled UILS Law Review a Student Journal since 2010along with a bi-annual Newsletter titled Legal Eagle. Both these publications are conceived and conceptualized by the students under the guidance of the teaching faculty.
INFRASTRUCTURE
The Institute provides state-of-the-art infrastructure to facilitate a sound learning experience for its students. It has an independent four storeyed building consisting of 28 modern spacious classrooms, including one smart classroom. The Institute also provides its students well-furnished separate Common Rooms for boys and girls. It has a well-equipped Administrative Office, Conference Hall and a Seminar Hall.
The Institute also has a well-furnished, Wi-Fi enabled Computer Lab, with more than 40 computers. The Institute provides for its faculty, researchers and students an extensive research platform which incudes a fully functional library equipped with a varied collection of legal referencers, books, journals and other e-resources. UILS has a functional Legal Aid Clinic, a modern Moot Court Hall and Language Laboratory to enhance the professional and communication skills of the students.
PLACEMENT CELL
In today’s fast changing world, building an effective career strategy is very important. UILS has a fully functional Placement Cell that acts as an interface between the legal profession and the students. The cell works consistently to generate placement and training opportunities for the students. It organizes workshops and training programmes to enable the students of UILS to become successful professionals. The cell also facilitates the selection of the students with various legal firms, advocates, companies and NGOs etc.
ALUMNI CELL
The Institute has a very active and enthusiastic Alumni Cell which was created to reach out to its alumni for developing mutual support amongst them, the faculty and the current students. The Cell works consistently to stay in touch with its alumni who work and excel in their fields and domains. In order to facilitate one to one interaction, the Cell has been organising annual Alumni Meets.
The Institute’s Alumni Cell is one of its kinds in the University to have specifically dedicated Alumni Room where its alumni are welcome to spend time to interact with their peers and juniors and also to reminisce in their cherished experiences from the time spend at UILS.
About University Institute of Laws – Ludhiana
Panjab University Regional Centre (PURC) has been established at the campus of P.U. Extension Library, Ludhiana w.e.f. the academic Session 2003-04. Prof. K.N. Pathak, then Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University, Chandigarh took keen interest and fulfilled the long outstanding demand of the residents of Ludhiana and set up the Panjab University Regional Centre at Ludhiana. A sum of Rs 100 Lakhs was provided for the construction of the academic block by Shri Lala Lajpat Rai, then Member of Parliament, from the M.P. Local Area Development Fund Scheme. The Institute was formally inaugurated by His Excellency the Governor of Punjab, Justice O.P. Verma on 5th Oct. 2003. A number of new initiatives are being undertaken under the dynamic leadership of Prof. R.C. Sobti, present Vice Chancellor of Panjab University, Chandigarh.
A three year LL.B. Course in the evening was started at the Panjab University Regional Centre, P.U. Extension Library, Ludhiana, from the Session 2003-04 as a self financing Course. The sanctioned intake of students every year is 72 seats plus 09 seats for NRI/ NRI sponsored/ Industry sponsored candidates. The same syllabus, examinations pattern is followed at UIL, PURC Ludhiana as followed in the LL.B. Course at the Department of Laws, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Students are admitted on the basis of a Law Entrance Test conducted by the Panjab University, Chandigarh. The syllabus and Course contents are revised from time to time by the Faculty of Laws of Panjab University, Chandigarh.
A five years B.A (Honors) LL.B. course has been introduced from the academic session 2006-07 at this Centre as a self financing course with an intake of 87 seats plus 08 NRI/ NRI sponsored seats. The students are admitted on the basis of a C.E.T. conducted by the Panjab University, Chandigarh. The Syllabus and Course of the BALLB course at UIL, PURC, Ludhiana is the same as that prescribed by the Faculty of Laws, Panjab University, Chandigarh and same syllabus and examinations are followed as that followed by the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS), Chandigarh conducting the same course.
About P.U. Swami Sarvanand Giri Regional Centre
Panjab University opened a Regional Centre for imparting quality technical education to kandi area hoshiarpur with the name of Swami Sarvanand Giri Panjab University Regional Centre in year 2006 with four branches of engineering. In 2007 Panjab university started two new courses in LAW as BALLB 5 year integrated course and 3 Years LLB course, and Master of computer applications (MCA).
